Server Chronicles: Big Moments

How cute is that?

A lot of life-changing things can happen at a restaurant.

People use food as a reason to gather and celebrate.

Eat and celebrate? Count me in.

You may not think of it, but a lot of people take this opportunity to proclaim more than just a birthday or anniversary.

Do you know how many proposals I have seen?

Just a few weeks ago, the whole back of the restaurant broke out in cheers because “she said yes.”

To each their own, but if someone proposed to me in a casual-dining restaurant:
I can’t say I would be too thrilled.

But it is sweet. We take our loved ones out to dinner to praise, love, and maybe even start a new chapter.

That is what this young man did recently to ask his date to be his girlfriend.

Usually we decorate plates to say: “Happy Birthday” or “Happy Anniversary.”

This time he wanted his big question to be written, and of course, we did it.

I would guess they were 20 at the oldest.

First of all, I was dying at how sweet it was.

I died again when I walked by and saw her crying happy tears.

Yes he could have asked her in person, in private.

At least it wasn’t a text message.

But he took the opportunity of sharing a special day with her, over food and drinks, and adding this in at the end.

I thought it was very sweet.

Sometimes I need this.

I need to take a step back and realize that we aren’t just servants running around every day.

Sometimes we make someone’s day or week.

We help in big moments.

We place the ring in a secret spot, or we decorate a plate, and we get to share in the joy.

Saying this, I hope he left his server a $20 because she didn’t even have to go through it.

Let’s be real.

Anyway, it is nice to see the joy that we can help bring, just by serving food.

When people make me mad, I say “it is just food.”

Sometimes it is much more than that though.

And this new girlfriend will remember this day for years and years.

I know I would.

Derek occasionally gets homework assignments from daycare. It mostly consists of him learning how to trace his own name, and some very simple math problems – simple if you’re way above the age of 4, that it is. But it’s homework nonetheless. And we want Derek to know the importance of school, especially since he’ll … MORE>>
