At work, sometimes I take things personally.
When people are rude, short, or they don’t tip- sometimes it is hard not to.
But I guess I never really thought about how guests may take things that I do personally.
Even if they brought it on.
Let’s go back to Saturday night because this, this was a first.
A young couple came in, and they just weren’t ready, ever.
I checked on them so many times, and they weren’t very friendly, so I decided I wasn’t going back for a while.
When I went to check on them again, another table had cold food, and I had to get a manager.
Then, a different table needed something.
So when I heard the man yell that he “NEEDED A SERVER.”
I was taken aback.

I went over and apologized, and I explained how they weren’t ready many times, and the cold food took precedence, but I didn’t mean to take long.
They insisted that I was purposely ignoring them.
I would never do that, I just gave them space, and I then I got busy.
They seemed to have taken it very personally.
He then proceeds to dump his wallet out on the table to reveal all of his cash.
I’d say it was about $125.
He started throwing it around, saying “look at this, what you know about this?”
I know that’s $125. Should I be impressed?

Again, I apologized for making them feel disrespected, and I got them a new server.
This wasn’t the easiest thing after the show he put on.
He felt so offended by me not giving them attention that he had to show me what he was worth.
That is my only guess for why he would do that.
And then “money bags” left their new server roughly a 15% tip.
I really missed out.
After this though, I got upset by how he acted.
And I took it personally.
It sucks working hard and caring and doing the best you can, to still get treated like crap or have complete strangers be rude to you.
It can seriously weigh on you.
I wish I was a person that didn’t care, but again, I am a person, and it happens.
We are not robots.

I then thought about Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
Just as I let him make me feel lesser, I may have had the same effect on him.
Servers have to try to not take it personally and realize the only thing people have on us is the ability to control our income.
That’s it.
Guests don’t know anything about me and vice versa.
Keep your money, but your actions toward me say more about you than they do me.
