Students studying in New College’s library sometimes look up when they hear the muted screams.
Other times, especially when they realize it’s 9 p.m. on a Wednesday, students will just shrug and wait a few minutes for the shrieking to end.
The wails are not symptoms of trouble brewing or, worse yet, signs that someone is in distress. Instead they are squealed by sometimes stressed students looking to blow off some steam.
New College’s Yelling Club has been growing in popularity since it began with three students yelling in an open field for fun.
Paige Leary, the surprisingly soft-spoken current president, said it’s a great way to de-stress during midterms.
“We’re all at this honors college and we’re taking all these rigorous classes,” said Leary, a fourth-year neurobiology student. “It’s a nice way to very casually decompress and commiserate without complaining or whining.”
The club started during the fall of 2009 when Jasmine Crenshaw, now 24, and two of her friends went to the athletic fields on the east end of campus and started yelling.
