Sarasota celebrates Super mom, dawns derby hats

This weekend was all about heroes, but c’mon, there were none greater than Super Mom. Local residents shared dinner, boat trips and time on the beach with that lady who was constantly reminding us to grab a jacket, and to go outside and play. Wait a second — “go outside and play?”

That’s right, mom knew all the tricks to a peaceful afternoon. She got ya!

But to be fair, we were probably difficult children but whenever we got hurt, or needed someone to talk to, mom was there.

So here’s to all those mothers out there. You did one helluva job!

If you didn’t want to beat feet on the sand at Siesta beach, there is always the fantastic sunsets:

Let’s all get on board with the fact that moms are bad asses:

High-5! We kicked ass celebrating mom!

There were other heroes in town as well. We are all kids at heart, and Saturday’s Free Comic Book Day offered a chance to scoop up a variety of awesome editions.

There were even a few super heroes on hand to flexing a little muscle, or doing whatever super heroes do at some venues.

Let’s all just agree, “Pikachu” is fun to say.

I kinda favor the Hulk.

Statewide, we had some pretty talented athletes vying for stardom for the Florida High School Athletic Association’s State Track and Field Finals at IMG Academy in Manatee County.

The Saturday, Sunday battle concluded with some spectacular performance, including a Class 4A championship effort by the Lakewood Ranch girl’s track team.

According to Sarasota Herald-Tribune sports writer John Lembo, the last girls track and field team to win a championship was Palmetto High School who won a Class 2A title in 1990.

Do you know what was popular in 1990… furby’s.

Creepy, right?

Alas, Sarasota boys had some pretty awesome results as well:

What could make the weekend any better but a fancy hat. Fans of horse racing, which is most of central and southern Florida, gathered in their spiffiest hats and slipped on the suspenders for horse racing’s greatest annual event, the Kentucky Derby.

ICYMI, it was 2-to-1 favorite Nyquist practically from post-to-post:

If that guy looks familiar to you, the jockey was Mario Gutierrez, the same man who rode “I’ll Have Another” to victory at the Kentucky Derby in 2012.

Guttierez dedicated his race to non other than his wife, who is expecting a baby, and of course, his mother:

To wrap this weekend up, Unravel offers its gratitude to our amazing Executive Intern, Olivia Neal of Riverside High School.

Thank you for everything, Olivia!

Derek occasionally gets homework assignments from daycare. It mostly consists of him learning how to trace his own name, and some very simple math problems – simple if you’re way above the age of 4, that it is. But it’s homework nonetheless. And we want Derek to know the importance of school, especially since he’ll … MORE>>

Thanks to the city of Sarasota, Lido Beach just got a bright new addition: a cerulean marker displaying how high sea levels are projected to rise in the next 100 years. Here’s the thing–the facts are scary. We said it. To name just a few: In less than 15 years, by 2030, sea levels are … MORE>>

It’s rare to see eight female filmmakers lined up in a row discussing their short film and documentary work–mostly because it’s rare to see eight women filmmakers together in one room at all.
