Waiting until the back-to-school sales tax holiday to buy a new computer?

Don’t bother.

The state Legislature has moved to shorten last year’s 10-day sales tax to three days and ousted some big ticket items from the list of tax breaks. Computers no longer qualify for the cost savings on the government’s dime, and neither does clothing priced at more than $60.

In 2015, the savings included clothing costing up to $100 and computers up to $750, which could have saved buyers as much as $7 and $52, respectively.

(The savings on those two items, by the way, is worth the equivalent of about three happy hour tabs.)

So don’t bother to wait on that new suit jacket either unless you can find one for less than $60.

Still, lawmakers had considered doing away with the sales-tax holiday entirely, but decided to scale back the holiday instead.

A Senate panel last week approved language in the $80 billion-plus budget that would reduce the 10-day sales tax holiday in 2015 to three days this year. The House and Senate reached a deal on the budget bill Monday and it will come up for a vote Friday before heading to the governor.
