Is summer vacation getting shorter for Sarasota schools?

Sarasota County schools could start school a week earlier than they did this year during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years, according to draft calendars proposed by a school district committee.

The calendars would see students start classes during the third week of August, while the 2015-16 and past calendars saw school start the fourth week of August. It would also see schools close for summer break during the second-to-last week of May instead of during the first week of June.

The Sarasota County School District has encouraged parents and members of the public to comment on the proposed school year calendars from now until Nov. 20 by emailing calendarcomments@sarasotacountyschools.net.

The School Board is expected to vote on the calendars at their 6:30 p.m. meeting on Jan. 5.

For the 2016-17 year, the proposed calendar would see school start on Aug. 15, 2016 and end May 26, 2017. For the 2017-18 year, school could start on Aug. 14, 2017 and end May 25, 2018.

The calendars were created by a 12-member school district committee made up of school and district-level administrators, teachers, support staff and parents.

School districts across the state are considering starting school earlier after the Legislature approve a measure that would allow them to start as early as Aug. 10.

Since 2007, Florida school districts could start school no earlier than two weeks before Labor Day. In some districts, that caused fall semesters to last beyond winter break and forced high school students to take fall semester finals in January.

The Manatee County School District has proposed starting school on Aug. 10 during both the 2016-17 and the 2017-18 school years.

Derek occasionally gets homework assignments from daycare. It mostly consists of him learning how to trace his own name, and some very simple math problems – simple if you’re way above the age of 4, that it is. But it’s homework nonetheless. And we want Derek to know the importance of school, especially since he’ll … MORE>>

Apparently, today is National Beer Day. April 7th is the celebration of when beer became legal again in the United States after the Cullen-Harrison Act was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt on March 23, 1933. Thanks to the city of Sarasota, Lido Beach just got a bright new addition: a cerulean marker displaying how high sea levels are projected to rise in the next 100 years. Here’s the thing–the facts are scary. We said it. To name just a few: In less than 15 years, by 2030, sea levels are … MORE>>

It’s rare to see eight female filmmakers lined up in a row discussing their short film and documentary work–mostly because it’s rare to see eight women filmmakers together in one room at all.
