Dad Blog: Becoming dad

Time for homework. Photo by John Lembo

Derek occasionally gets homework assignments from daycare. It mostly consists of him learning how to trace his own name, and some very simple math problems – simple if you’re way above the age of 4, that it is.

But it’s homework nonetheless. And we want Derek to know the importance of school, especially since he’ll be in kindergarten pretty soon.

So he came home with an assignment Monday night. I told him we would work on it after dinner.

“Can I watch Curious George,” Derek asked.

“Yes, you can watch Curious George. But homework comes first.”

That was, by far, the most parent thing I have ever said in the four-plus years of Derek’s life.

“Wow,” I said to Christina.

“I know,” she replied.

That’s when I realized it was official: I had become both my parents.

Then I helped Derek with his homework. Then we watched Curious George.

Fatherhood….
