DAD BLOG: …. at the old ballgame

Christina had two art classes to teach last Saturday, so Derek and I headed to Tampa to take in a New York Yankees spring training game.

We each got a free collapsible water bottle for just walking through the gate.  We munched on a terribly overpriced pizza for lunch. And Derek got to run the bases after the game, a super-cool perk that came with a free t-shirt.

We saw Gary Sanchez, the Yankees’ superstar-in-the-making catcher, lash a two-run double to left. We saw Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman unleash his 100 m.p.h. fastball. We saw home runs. And we nearly caught a home run ourselves before Chris Carter’s liner to left died on the warning track.

And yet there was Derek, standing in the concourse saying, “You never get me anything!”

In his hand was a miniature Yankees helmet that earlier had been filled with three scoops of cookies and cream ice cream.
