Downtown bookstore moving to bigger home

Bookstore1 is moving to a new downtown storefront this month.

But you don’t have to look far for the beloved bookstore’s new home. It’s just yards away from its currentspace.

The local bookshop will close its store at 1359 Main St. on Feb. 14 and reopen a little more than a week later at 12 S. Palm Ave. in the historic Orange Blossom building

Bookstore1 owner Georgia Court said she hopes to have the new shop up and running on Feb. 22 or 23. The move will give Bookstore1 about 50 percent more — and much needed — floor space. Court has been on the hunt for a bigger site for about a year.

“We have needed more space for a long time now,” Court said in a statement “That’s really clear when we hold author events in the store.”

The new South Palm store will have a special area designated for book clubs. Many of her bookcases are on wheels, she said, but the new space should keep the staff from needed to rearrange the space on a regular basis.

“It will be such a luxury for us not to have to move furniture each time we hold a club meeting or an author signing,” Court said.

The independent bookstore is known for its events, club meetings and strong selection of classics and new arrivals.

The Orange Blossom building, which is at the intersection of Main Street and Palm Avenue, is also home to Burke Antiques and Palm Avenue Fine Art. The new store is less than a block away from Bookstore1’s current home.
