Bicyclists can work off that Thanksgiving feast on Sunday and potentially win some sweet prizes in the process by entering Sol’s Deli-Cat, the first alleycat-style bike event Sarasota has seen in a few years.
As you might guess by the name, the ride starts and ends in the parking garage of Sol’s NYC Delicatessen, next to the Hollywood 20 on Main Street. Riders will gather at noon to register and grab some nibbles, and wheels hit the ground at 1:30 p.m.
The important stuff: Registration is 10 bucks. Helmets are required. Any style of bike is welcome. (Unicyclists, let’s see what ya got!)
The exact course won’t be revealed until riders get their course maps, but it’s a 25-mile route with 6 checkpoints. Expect to be challenged by Sarasota’s only hill, aka the Ringling bridge. Riders must get their route maps signed at each checkpoint, and whether you crush the competition or not, everyone will get a chance to crush some happy hour beers at Sol’s when all is said and done.
The first three riders overall and first lady rider with fully-certified route maps will get swag, but speed isn’t the only way to land a prize. In traditional alleycat fashion, the “DFL” rider (an acronym for “Dead Fucking Last”) will also be rewarded, and the first 15 folks to register get a swag bag from Ass Savers, maker of pop-in mudguards. If you’ve ever ridden a fenderless bike after a sudden rain, you can understand the appeal.
Prizes include a $200 gift certificate from Webber Street Tattoo, gift baskets from Kahwa Coffee and JDub’s Brewing and bike accessories from Ringling Bicycles, as well as some other bike-related attire and gear.
