Server Chronicles: Closing Time

It’s 11:20 p.m., and we close at 11:30 p.m.

There are just a few people left, finishing up their dessert, paying, and leaving.

Everyone is doing their side work, so when we are closed, we can run out of here.

The place is empty, and I think I saw a tumbleweed go by.

Then you walk in.

“What time do you guys close?”

We actually close in 10 minutes.

“Phew, great, we JUST made it.”

Wrong answer.

The correct response was, “oh darn, I will go somewhere else that is open later.”

Or “Ok, I will come back tomorrow.”

Anything but what you said.

I have to wake up for school in the morning, but no, it’s fine.

I will stay an extra unnecessary hour to make sure you get your well-done steak at midnight on a Tuesday.

How?

It would be one thing if you came in late, felt bad, and just had some dessert or a salad, and got the heck out.

But no, you come in, order well-done or extra-modified food.

People that come in this late and don’t care at all are the type to also order annoying food as well.

Because, why wouldn’t they?

Ok, they got their food, now I can continue to clean and get out of here, right?

No.

The unthinkable happens.

The grills are all turned off and being cleaned, and you, you say you don’t like your dish

You’d like a new one.

The madness.

It is now 12:15 a.m., and everything is shut down.

But we turn everything back on just for your one, important, dish.

Are you doing this on purpose?

Another 10 minutes until you get it.

And the cooks are cussing me out.

Thanks.

You approve.

I’m so glad.

Of course, you’re also getting dessert.

Now it’s pushing 1 a.m., and I could have been already home and in bed, if it wasn’t for you.

The 10% tip was worth it.

Have a wonderful night.

People don’t realize the domino effect that happens. I understand we are open for a reason, but it is common courtesy to not come into somewhere right before they close, especially if you see they are empty.

If you have no other choice, at least be polite and tip accordingly, if not extra.
