Server Chronicles: Identification

May I see your ID?

“What, you don’t think I look old enough?”

If you look under 30, we are supposed to ask.

So you’re welcome for thinking you are young, first of all.

Second of all, even if you are 50, if you want to drink at a restaurant, you should have your ID, no matter what.

I’m pretty sure you are always supposed to have it on you anyway.

So yes, you may be 40, but I can’t and won’t serve you without a proper ID.

Why?

Because I could be arrested.

What?!

Yes, I can be arrested and my restaurant could lose their liquor license which is thousands and THOUSANDS of dollars.

But you don’t think about that.

You just think about the Long Island Iced Tea you need.

IF it is so important to you, please leave and try somewhere else.

I have had people sass me, but I don’t care. It isn’t worth my job, or my life, to serve your selfish-self a drink.

I had a woman tell me, “This will reflect in your tip.”

I said, “I don’t care.”

I shouldn’t have said that, but really, it is a known thing that you need to provide ID for alcohol.

Just do it.

Also, international IDs are not allowed, at least in Florida.

You need to provide a valid Florida Driver’s License or a passport.

An ID from Sweden or whatever isn’t supposed to fly because we don’t know what they should look like.

Who carries their passport to a bar?

Someone that wants to drink, that’s who.

You should know the rules of your state/country and even county.

If drinking is so important to you, follow the rules, and you’ll never have to worry.

I was recently at a bar, as a patron for once.

Yes I go out and do things.

A student from Jamaica was next to me, and they wouldn’t take her ID from Jamaica.

She became extremely defensive and upset, claiming this restaurant must not want people from other countries in their establishment.

It isn’t personal, it is the law.

She caused such a fuss over a Heineken.

The manager even offered to buy her dinner, and she wouldn’t do it, she left.

She is lucky to have ever been served with that ID, or maybe she only has luck at smaller places like that, and that’s why she tried and became so upset when it didn’t work.

I just don’t understand why people get so mad.

We are just doing our jobs, and if food and drink is so important to you, I feel bad for you.

Dealing with so many crazy and selfish people every day makes me realize what is and isn’t important.

Getting a vodka sprite isn’t what matters in life.

Derek occasionally gets homework assignments from daycare. It mostly consists of him learning how to trace his own name, and some very simple math problems – simple if you’re way above the age of 4, that it is. But it’s homework nonetheless. And we want Derek to know the importance of school, especially since he’ll … MORE>>
