January 1st of each year always brings the implementation of new laws and changes.
One of these changes the Sarasota County Commission approved last year. 54 more parks, preserves and trails were added as “dog-friendly” sites in north and south county. Prior to the resolution being adopted, there were only 17 sites.
As of January 1, 2017, Sarasota has 71 areas (in blue) you can walk and hang out with your dog.
These “dog-friendly” areas require your dog to be leashed at all times within designated areas. Service dogs are allowed at all parks and beaches. The only places where dogs can safely be off-leash in a fenced area are Paw parks (in yellow).
Of course there are always some guidelines to follow. Don’t ruin the fun by being “that dog owner.”
-
Your furry pal must be registered and have current license tags and vaccinations.
- Your buddy needs be leashed, maximum 6-foot-long leash, unless you are at a Paw park.
- Humans are required to pick up after their fur babies and properly dispose of the waste.
- Your fur children are not allowed in playgrounds, athletic fields or other areas not designated for dogs on leash.
