Server Chronicles: Gift Cards

We need to have a conversation about gift cards.

I know beginning next week, there will be floods of people using the gift cards they received for Christmas.

Some of these people don’t know what life is about.

What do I mean by this?

I will tell you:

1.)    A lot of these people with gift cards, will be people that have never came here before. Maybe because it was too expensive, or maybe these are people that don’t go anywhere unless they have a gift card to go there.

Not a good sign.

These people are awkward. They usually don’t know how to order like a real person. They especially don’t know how to tip appropriately, I will tell you that.

They are the kind of people that when I ask what they want to drink, their eyes wander around the room and act really stressed, like they have never thought about it before, and then order a Coke.

2.)    There are some normal people, possibly even nice people that use a gift card, and then they tip on their “after-gift card” price.

No.

This is the wrong thing to do.

If your check is $150, and you use a $100 gift card, you do not tip on the $50 remaining total, you monster.

You tip on the original amount.

Just because you used a gift card, doesn’t mean I did less work.

^ I should have that put on a bumper sticker.

In fact, when using a gift card, I tip extra because that was free money anyway.

It is what a sensible person would do.

But most of these scoundrels are not sensible.

3.)    Don’t get me started on electronic gift cards.

Why are they a thing?

I understand it is convenient, technology is taking over, blah blah..

Please just print them out like a normal person.

I have had people that had me sift through their emails to find their gift cards. I have to type the number in the computer, so the options are: give me your phone, or write the number down for me.

It isn’t enough I just served you for an hour, and you have free money, but the thought of you writing down the gift card number for me, must have been traumatizing.

It takes a lot of time when I am busy with everything else, to figure out your phone and your numbers.

Please be considerate about this. OR just print them out, like a gentleman/lady would.

Giving is a wonderful part of the holiday season. Remember how generous people may have been with you, and pay it forward. Also use your gift cards wisely.
