It has been another record-breaking year for turtle nests in the Sarasota County area. There were 4,588 nests found in the 35-mile stretch from Longboat Key to Venice, according to numbers obtained by Mote Marine Laboratory.

One of the cutest turtle facts: when these baby turtles become big loggerheads, they’ll return to the same spot they were born to leave their nests.

If you’re not familiar with turtle nesting season from seeings marked-off sections of beach and signs warning you to stay away from turtle nests, you might remember them from their starring, feature film debut: in the Nicholas Sparks and Miley Cyrus combo that is The Last Song.

Remember this scene? Miley’s character, Ronnie, freaks out while trying to save turtle nests on a North Carolina beach.
