#WeCookWednesdays

PART II – By Samantha Putterman and Marla Korenich

In our second cooking attempt we decided to take on bacon. And egg, and rice.

Fried rice is one delicious thing, but throw some bacon in there, and you’re on a whole other level. As we scoured social media for our next big Tasty takeover we made sure to choose a dish that wouldn’t give us another “shrimp-tail dilemma.” (Last week, our first cooking adventure was a lemon garlic shrimp pasta, which turned out … interesting).

Well, needless to say, when we saw the word “bacon” it was all downhill from there.

Here is the video of the Bacon and Egg Fried Rice we desperately tried to duplicate:

How could we mess that up right? We didn’t, but I would say this recipe is more difficult than it led on.

First of all, we don’t know many 20-somethings with a rice cooker, and no one has time to sit and wait for rice to cook in a pot. So we bought the “boil-in-a-bag” rice for this. You throw the bags in a pot of boiling water or the microwave, and boom, rice. Kinda sketchy.

Oh, the bacon. I really don’t know what else to say about it.

Ok, back from daydreaming about bacon. It was not as easy to cut as the video shows, and it got super mushy because of the fat – our first peeve.

Next we cooked the egg and onions. The onions are to be “cooked until translucent.” We sat there and had to remember what that word means. I’m still not sure that should be applied to onions, am I right?

Here is where things got a little out of hand. Add rice, and stir-fry. We don’t know exactly how long that is, or what it is supposed to look like. Also our pan wasn’t big enough. Rice was flying around like little Miley Cyruses’ on wrecking balls.

We made it rain bacon and egg. What a beautiful summer storm.

It’s not the prettiest dish, but who are we to discriminate?

IMG_0202

It was a little bland, and of course it could have used more bacon. Bacon is life. Also the onion chunks could have been smaller. The recipe says to dice, which we did, but the video shows huge chunks. Also, we would have undercooked the rice just a little because you stir-fry it after. It was a little mushy. We added more soy sauce to each of our plates because we felt it needed more flavor.

It was delicious, though. We almost died of being so full and happy from bacon.

“911 what’s your emergency?”

“Bacon … too good .. can’t .. go on.”

Derek occasionally gets homework assignments from daycare. It mostly consists of him learning how to trace his own name, and some very simple math problems – simple if you’re way above the age of 4, that it is. But it’s homework nonetheless. And we want Derek to know the importance of school, especially since he’ll … MORE>>
